New Young Pony Club

I New Young Pony Club sono un gruppo londinese composto da cinque persone contraddistinto dalla carismatica Tahita Bulmer, cantante. I NYPC sono l’ultima scoperta del fenomeno nu rave, dopo aver pubblicato un paio di singoli dancefloor killer come Ice Cream e The Bomb sono al lavoro sul loro album di debutto. Tahita ci ha parlato in anteprima del progetto.

Quando e come sono nati i NYPC?
Andy e io ci siamo conosciuti nella scena londinese, entrambi eravamo in altre band ed eravamo annoiati, abbiamo cominciato a lavorare insieme scrivendo Ice Cream il nostro primo pezzo che ha iniziato a girare nei club riscuotendo un certo interesse, abbiamo abbandonato i nostri precedenti progetti e formato i NYPC. Ora siamo una grande e felice gang.

I NYPC sono collegati alla scena Nu Rave, normalmente le band non amano essere associate ad un movimento ma voi avete partecipato insieme a CSS, Klaxons e Sunshine Underground all’NME Indie Rave tour. Qual è la vostra opinione a riguardo e com’è stato partecipare a quel tour?
Partecipare all’NME Indie Rave Tour è stato sorprendente, tutte le band coinvolte erano formate da persone molto carine con cui abbiamo passato dei momenti davvero piacevoli, inoltre ognuno era felice per il successo ottenuto dagli altri e viceversa. Era com’essere in gita scolastica. Credo che i NYPC siano una disco, punk, funk, electronic band. Esistiamo da molto tempo prima che il termine nu rave venisse inventato, ma se serve a far uscire allo scoperto una nuova ondata di band talentuose allora ben venga questo termine.

Perché New Young Pony Club? La prima cosa che mi viene da pensare è che siete fans dei My Little Pony, se è così, qual è il vostro preferito?
Volevamo chiamarci New Pony ma non abbiamo potuto perché esisteva gia una band con quel nome. Da bambina ero una grande fan dei My Little Pony ma non ho mai potuto averne uno perché secondo i miei genitori non avevano “valore educativo”. Un amico mi ha regalato il mio primo My Little Pony al mio ventunesimo compleanno e gliene sono davvero grata, è rosa e ha una ciliegia sul sedere.

Tahita, il tuo look è retro ‘80s con un tocco attuale, lo stesso stile si riflette nella vostra musica, è uno stile studiato o è il tuo vero modo di essere? Chi sono le tue icone di stile in ambito musicale?
Questo è solo il mio modo di essere. Le mie icone di stile sono Iggy Pop, Debbie Harry, David Bowie, Talking Heads, tutte le ragazze che frequentavano il CBGB’s negli anni ’70, Rita Hayworth, Katerine Hepburn, Lana Turner e tutte le incredibili modelle che posarono per Halston e YSL dagli anni ’70.

Tahita il tuo modo di cantare è molto riconoscibile, hai una voce naturale e sexy, hai studiato per ottenere quest’effetto o è la tua attitudine?
Ho due modi di cantare, uno è molto classico, l’altro è appartiene di più ai NYPC ed è sexy, femminile e laconico, entrambi riflettono due aspetti della mia personalità.

State lavorando al vostro primo album, puoi anticiparmi qualcosa? Avete scelto il titolo e quando uscirà?
No, non abbiamo ancora un titolo, ma sarà un grande album (credo), ambizioso e vario negli stili. Ci saranno canzoni da ballare, canzoni con cui rilassarsi e altre con cui coricarsi. I testi sono fantastici.

I vostri singoli usciti sin ora: Get Lucky, Ice Cream e The Bomb hanno uno stile riconoscibile, apprezzo le band con una propria personalità, credi che questa si rifletta anche negli altri brani che faranno parte dell’album o ci sarà qualcosa di completamente diverso?
Ciascuna delle nostre canzoni esprime diversi aspetti dei NYPC, quello sexy, quello glamourous, ma anche colorato, divertente, leggero, eccitante, ansioso e riflessivo. Esiste un suono NYPC ben definito indice di una forte personalità.

Credi che il Nu Rave avrà un futuro o sarà uno di quei fenomeni stagionali come ad esempio fu il periodo Romo?
Credo che alcune delle band coinvolte in questo fenomeno tra cui noi, Klaxons, CSS, sono dotate di talento e riescono a coinvolgere molte persone, sicuramente queste band avranno un futuro. Il Nu Rave in questo momento in Inghilterra sta prendendo piede in modo consistente, i giovani lo stanno abbracciando come alternativa alle band noiose e vecchie di stile come Razorlight e Oasis, quindi avrà sicuramente un futuro.

Come nuova band avete qualche gruppo da consigliarci?
I NYPC amano ogni sorta di musica nuova e vecchia, ma le cose più nuove che stiamo ascoltando sono The Horrors, The Aliens, Late Of The Pier, Regina Spector e Xerox Teens.

Qual è l’oggetto Nu Rave che ciascuno dovrebbe possedere?
Glowstick e del make up glitter sugli occhi.

Vi considerate una party animal band? Vi piace frequentare i club? Qual è la vostra serata preferita?
Ci piace fare festa ma solo quando c’è qualcosa di veramente cool per cui scomodarsi, non lo facciamo solo perché dobbiamo. Ci deve essere un posto pieno di persone sexy e interessanti con dell’ottima musica da ballare.

New Young Pony Club are a five-piece band from London with a talented and charming singer called Tahita Bulmer. NYPC are the brand new phenomenon came from the nu rave scene. After the release of a couple of dancefloor killer singles like Ice Cream and The Bomb, they’re working on their debut album. Tahita speak to us, for the first time, about it.

Where did you meet each others and start play together?
Andy and I met on the London scene. We were both in bands already but we were very bored with them. We pressganged the others into joining after Ice Cream became a bit of an underground hit. But we are one big happy gang now.

NYPC are releated to the Nu rave scene, usually musicians don't like to be part of a movement but you have take part of the NME indie rave tour, so which is your point of you and how was beeing part of that tour?
The NME tour was amazing. All the bands involved were really
sweet people to be around and everyone was very happy for the other
bands to be having great sucess. It was like being on a school trip. I
think NYPC are a disco, punk, funk, electronic band. We existed long
before the term Neu Rave but if its helps NME champion a new exciting
wave of ambitious bands then obviously the Neu Rave term is a good
thing.

Why NYPC? Are you all fans of My Little Pony? Your music is pop, catchy and full of colour like the little ponys, do you have a favourite one?
We wanted to be called Pony Club but couldnt asa band with this namealready existed. Iwas a big fan of My little pony but wasn't allowed one as a child as they "had no educational value". A friend brought me one for my 21st birthday however of which I am very fond. It is pink and has cherries on its bum.

Tahita, your look is retro '80s mixed with a modern touch and i can feel the same taste in your music, is it something you've done on purpose or this is just the way you are? Do you have any music and style icon?
This is just the way I am. My musical and style icons are
Iggy Pop, Debbie Harry, David Bowie, Talking Heads, all the girls that
used to hang out at CBGB's in the 70s, Rita Hayworth, Katherine
Hepburn, Lana Turner and all those amazing models for Halston and YSL
from the 70's, too.

Tahita you have a unique way of singing, really natural and sexy, did you study to reach this attitude or is just your way of singing?
I have two singing voices, one of which is very classical and the other
of which is my NYPC style, which I hope is sexy, feminine and laconic.
Both of them expresses aspects of my personality

You are working on your first album, can you tell me something about it? Do you already have a title and when it cames out?
It doesn't have a title yet. It is a great album ( I think). Ambitious and varied in style. There is stuff to dance to, stuff to lounge around to and
stuff to get you laid on there. The lyrics are super fantastic too.

Your singles Get Lucky, The Bomb and Ice Cream have a recognisable style, and i like band with a proper personality, is this feeling reflected even in the other song of the album or we have to expect something completly different?
All of our tracks express different aspects of NYPC, sexy, colourful, glamorous, fun, sleazy, exciting, wistful or reflective.
There is a definite NYPC sound which I think says we have a strong
musical personality.

Do you think Nu Rave will have a future or it will be a seasonal phenomenon like the Romo was?
I think the bands involved like Klaxons,
us, Css etc are all very talented and driven people so they all
definitley have a future. The Neu Rave thing here is really kicking off
and young people appear to be embracing it as an alternative to all the
boring old fashioned bands like Razorlight and Oasis so it probably has
a future too.

Any new band to suggest to us?
NYPC love all sorts of music. Presently as a band we
are listening to The Horror, Late of the
Pier, the Aliens, Regina Specktor and Xerox Teens.

Which is the must have nu rave object?
A Glowstick and some glittery eyemakeup.

Are NYPC a party animal band? Do you like go clubbing? Which is your favourite night in town?
We like to party but only when there is definitely something really cool to go to. We don't just get smashed for the sake of it. There has to be somewhere full of sexy, interesting people and great music to hang out at.
