Stretta collaboratrice dell’enfant prodige del folk Sufjian Stevens l’americana Sarah Worden alias My Brightest Diamond pubblica il nuovo album Bring Me the Workhorse, un lavoro intimista partorito da un immaginario fiabesco che traccia dopo traccia, si attorciglia alle caviglie sotto forma di nebbia e lentamente ci avvolge, facendoci entrare nel suo mondo magico e notturno.
La tua voce è unica, quando l’hai scoperta e cosa pensi sia la cosa più importante da imparare per poter cantare?
Tutti i bambini sono in grado di cantare, solo che la maggior parte ad un certo punto della loro vita sfortunatamente smettono di farlo. Dico questo per far capire alle persone che da sempre desiderano cantare di non ascoltare gli stupidi che dicono loro di non avere una voce speciale. Non conta tanto quanto uno studia, io non sarà mai Maria Callas, ma questo non significa che non posso migliorare come cantante. La cosa più importante per me è non darsi limitazioni e continuare a camminare facendo in modo che il nostro viaggio si compia. E’ un processo molto spaventoso perché veniamo spogliati da ogni maschera, ma le scelte e le libertà che otterremo varranno la messa in gioco della nostra vulnerabilità.
Qual è stato il tuo percorso musicale? So che hai iniziato a cantare guardando i video di Withney Houston e Mariah Carey, confermi?
Si! Ma cominciamo dall’inizio: il mie primi vero amore sono stati soul e rhythm & blues, crescendo a Detroit ho avuto modo di ascoltare molta buona musica alla radio e nei locali. Per molto tempo ho desiderato diventare una cantante soul e infatti i miei primi lavori erano indirizzati verso quelle sonorità, ma poi ho capito che era un genere che non mi permetteva di evolvermi stilisticamente. Solo dopo aver capito cosa voleva fare la mia voce ho iniziato a dare spazio ai miei altri interessi: la musica classica e il rock. Nell’album ci sono ancora alcune influenze soul le puoi sentire in brani come The Good and the Bad Guy e Workhorse. Il prossimo album sarà molto più classico ma sogno di fare un album dance, vedremo.
Ti viene facile nella tua musica unire il rock all’opera?
Assolutamente no! Chiunque abbia fatto questo tipo di lavoro come Antony, Andrew Bird o Bjork hanno dovuto affrontare diverse prove prima di ottenere un risultato, per non parlare delle difficoltà dell’inserire nelle canzoni un quartetto d’archi. In essenza la musica classica ha tantissime dinamiche di spazio, tecniche e raggi emozionali che io cerco di trasportare nel moderno attraverso un song writing personale.
Dalle tue foto si percepisce che ti piace giocare con ruoli e costumi, come ti vesti nel quotidiano?
I vestiti possono diventare l’espressione di come ti senti ma oggi non mi preoccupo più di indossare lo stesso stile ogni giorno. Certo è divertente celebrare la creatività attraverso i vestiti, ma dipende dal mio umore, a volte sono pigra e me ne frego del mio aspetto.
Sul tuo sito ho visto che ti sei esibita alla Spiegeltent (www.spiegeltent.org), una tenda da circo anni ’30 curata nei minimi dettagli che ogni estate si ferma a New York, me ne parli?
Spiegeltent è questa incredibile vecchia tenda circense itinerante che viene montata al Pier 17 di New York ogni estate per circa un mese. Ci sono musical e spettacoli di cabaret differenti ogni notte, per questo l’ho scelto come location per il release party dell’album. Da grande fan di Tom Waits ho sempre avuto tra le mie fantasie quella di mollare tutto e unirmi al circo, per me suonare a Spiegeltent è stato l’avverarsi di un sogno.
Chi è la tua icona e perché?
Quando ero piccola i miei genitori erano molto restrittivi riguardo al guardare la tv (grazie a Dio!), ma mi era permesso guardare Wonder Woman, la serie cult interpretata da Linda Carter. Per me è diventata immediatamente un’eroina, ricordo che usavo un pezzo di corda come lazzo, i bracciali d’oro di mamma diventavano i bracciali del poter e dopo aver indossato un top rosso facevo una piroetta in salotto e mi trasformavo in Wonder Woman. A quattro anni feci le piroette troppo vicine al calorifero e così ci picchiai la testa contro! E’ stata una caduta drammatica che mi ha portato due cerotti a forma di farfalla sulla fronte facendomi guadagnare attendibilità come supereroe davanti a tutti i miei amichetti. Nella mia immaginazione di bambina diventò il veicolo d’espressione per esprimere potere e abilità, per credere che il bene trionfasse sul male e apprendere la bellezza della femminilità. Probabilmente c’ispirerà per sempre.
Per finire, mi descrivi com’è il tuo diamante più scintillante?
Se tutti i diamanti realizzati per il pubblico e il loro valore di mercato cadesse drasticamente, i diamanti avrebbero meno valore monetario ma non perderebbero di significato per le persone che li possiedono. Non puoi attribuire un dollaro di valore a qualcosa che per te è molto prezioso. Questo è il concetto da cui il nome della band ha preso origine, perché qualcosa che per me era molto importante si è in seguito evoluto in qualcosa da condividere, la mia musica, il credere che la bellezza cambi il mondo e che l’immaginazione porta luce e conoscenza, per questo è importante coltivarla e perseverarla. Non è questo quello che vogliamo dall’arte? Il sentire, il cercare il significato e sperimentare la conoscenza.

You have a beautiful and unique voice, when did you discover it and what do you think is the most important part of learning to sing?
Every child sings, its just that some people stop singing for some unfortunate reason. I say that just to make a point to people who have always wanted to sing but were afraid or won't try because some stupid person told them they had to be born with a special voice. Of course no matter how much I study, I will never be Maria Callas, but that doesn't mean I can't grow as a singer. So maybe that's what I would say is the most important thing, not deciding what your limitations are as a singer, but rather to keep working and allow the journey to happen. It's a very scary process because all of our masks are ripped off, but the choices and freedoms we gain are worth facing that vulnerability.
What can you tell me about your music process? Is it true you have started singin’along to Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston video?
Yeah! Bit let’s start from the beginning: my first real love was definitely soul and rhythm and blues. Growing up near Detroit, there was a lot of good music on the radio. For a long time I really wanted to be a soul singer so my first record was more in that direction, but after Word was finished and I began writing new songs, I could not forsee a path that gave me options for a stylistically diverse musical future. I also had to reckon with what my voice WANTED to do, so I had to begin to look at my other interests, which were in classical music and rock. I think there are still remnants of soul, in songs like The Good And The Bad Guy or in Workhorse. It's something I want to keep searching for...the next album is a lot more classical and I'm dreaming up a dance record, so we'll seeing.
It’s an easy process for you mixing opera and rock music together?
No it's not easy! Anyone who has done this work, andrew bird, antony, bjork, run into certain challenges and the main issue, at least with string quartet. In essence classical music is so rich in dynamic range, emotional depth and technique, so I want to find ways to bring those things into modern, personal song writing...
It’s seems that you really like play with costumes and roles, how do you dress in everyday life?
Clothing can be an expression of how you feel but I am not worried anymore about wearing the same style every day. And creativity is a really fun thing to celebrate in clothing. Sometimes I have the energy for it and go all out and other times I'm very lazy about my appearance.
Trough your website I’ve discovered Spiegeltent, a beautiful place where you are going to play, is it a kind of music circus? What can you tell me about it?
Spiegeltent is this incredible old tent that sets up on Pier 17 in New York for about a month and yes it looks like a circus tent! There are cabaret and musical acts that are booked each night and we will be playing our cd release there. As a huge fan of Tom Waits and having my own fantasies of joining the circus, it's a dream come true for me to play the tent.
Who is your icon and why?
When I was little my parents were pretty restrictive about our television watching (thank goodness!) but we were allowed to watch Wonderwoman, the tv series with Linda Carter. She quickly became a hero. I'd dress up with a piece of rope for lasso, mom's jewlery for the gold arm bands of power, a red tank top and take a swirl about the living room to turn into Wonderwoman. When I was about 4 I was spinning a little too close to the fireplace and fell, knocking my head into the bricks! It was a dramatic fall, but then I had two butterfly bandaids put on my forehead, which gave me bragging rights to all my friends about the challenges of being a superhero.
To my child's imagination, she became the vehicle of expressing power and capability, of good forces conquering the bad, and of the beauty of femininity. May she inspire us
forever.
At last, can you describe me how it looks your brightest diamond?
If all of the diamonds were released to the public and the market value dramatically decreased, then diamonds would have less monetary value but there would be no lessening of significance or of meaning in the diamonds people possess- You can't put a dollar amount on something that is precious to you. That's initially what the band name was about, describing a relationship that was of the highest value to me and over time the meaning has changed from such a personal one to something more about sharing what is dear to me, music, the belief that beauty changes the world and is important to cultivate and preserve, that the imagination can bring light and revelation. Isn't that we all want from art? To feel, to find meaning, to experience an enlightenment
